AI App Builder Alternatives — Honest Side-By-Side

I looked at eight AI app builders before building AI App Factory. Here is what each one does, who it is good for, and why I ended up building my own for native mobile apps. No bashing. No paid comparisons. Just notes from someone who shipped.

Alternatives

Every AI app builder
I looked at first.

Before I built AI App Factory I tried most of them. Some were great. Most targeted web apps. I needed native mobile. So I built my own system.

Why I built my own

I am a self-taught developer. 10 years shipping at startups and big companies. I left my job and shipped 4 native apps to the App Store in one month.

While doing that I tried most AI app builders on this page. Each one was good at something. None of them shipped the kind of app I wanted — native iOS and Android, production-grade, with auth and payments and real store submission.

So I built the system for myself. Boilerplate, AI agents, deployment automation, store submission. Then I turned it into AI App Factory.

This page is not here to bash the tools below. Most of them are excellent inside their category. This page is here to help you pick the right one for what you are actually trying to ship.

8 alternatives

Bolt.new

Web app generator

Full comparison →

Prompt-to-app for web apps. Fast and impressive for browser-first products.

Good for

Landing pages, SaaS dashboards, marketing sites you ship in a day.

Why I picked a different path

I wanted native iOS and Android apps on the App Store, not web apps. So I needed a different system.

Lovable

Web app generator

Full comparison →

Prompt-to-app for full-stack web projects with polished UI.

Good for

Founders building a web product fast with minimal code.

Why I picked a different path

Same reason. Web apps were not the goal. I wanted to ship to the App Store.

v0

UI component generator

Full comparison →

Vercel's AI UI generator. Produces beautiful React components.

Good for

Designers and web devs who want fast UI drafts inside a Next.js stack.

Why I picked a different path

A component generator is a piece of the puzzle, not the puzzle. I needed the full stack plus deployment plus store submission.

Cursor

AI code editor

Full comparison →

The best AI-native code editor right now. I use it every day.

Good for

Writing code faster inside your own repo with context-aware AI.

Why I picked a different path

Cursor is not a competitor. It is the tool I use to run AI App Factory. Different layer.

Replit

Cloud IDE + agent

Full comparison →

Cloud IDE with an AI agent that can build web apps end-to-end.

Good for

Learners and hobby projects that live inside a browser.

Why I picked a different path

Vendor lock-in was the blocker. I wanted the code to live on my laptop, not a rented workspace.

FlutterFlow

Visual mobile builder

Full comparison →

Drag-and-drop builder that exports Flutter code.

Good for

Non-coders who want to ship mobile apps without writing Dart.

Why I picked a different path

I already know React Native. I wanted a system that extends my existing stack instead of replacing it with Flutter.

Rork

Mobile prompt-to-app

Full comparison →

Prompts that generate mobile app prototypes.

Good for

Quick mobile mockups to test a UI idea.

Why I picked a different path

I wanted production-grade code with auth, payments, push, and store submission — not prototypes.

Base44

App generator

Full comparison →

Another AI app generator in the crowded web-first category.

Good for

Early-stage web MVP validation.

Why I picked a different path

Same pattern. Web-first. I stayed focused on native mobile as the outcome.

Honest tradeoffs

When AI App Factory is the wrong answer.

  • You are shipping a web app, not a native mobile app. Pick a web-first tool above.
  • You have never touched a terminal. This is a developer system, not a no-code drag-and-drop builder.
  • You want a hosted dashboard where you click a button and get a deployed app. This gives you a repo. You own and run it.
  • You need Flutter, not React Native. The whole stack is React Native + Expo.
